This web site has been developed as a partnership between the University of Colorado Boulder/Marion Downs Center and Hands & Voices. These pages contain research and information for researchers, practicing audiologists, teachers of the deaf, speech/language pathologists, early intervention providers, parent leaders and Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing Leaders, mentors and sign language instructors providing services to families and children who are deaf or hard of hearing. INFORMATION ABOUT CULTURAL COMPETENCE:  

A number of organizations, including the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) have developed training materials for professionals for culturally and linguistically diverse populations.

Information is provided for English-speaking professionals who provide services to families/parents who have infants/toddlers/children who are deaf or hard of hearing.  Therefore, comparisons are made between spoken language characteristics between other languages and English.  Information could be modified to contrast with any country’s instructional language.
