TITLE: VALIDATION OF HEARING AID FITTING FOR INFANTS AND TODDLERS

Goal 1 of this project is to develop an assessment procedure for the validation of amplification fitting of infants/toddlers with HL. This project will provide data about the utility of 3 different approaches: 1A) a physiological measure of speech discrimination through event related potentials (ERPs), 1B) a behavioral assessment of infant speech discrimination through visual reinforcement infant speech discrimination (VRISD) and 1C) parent questionnaires of auditory development.
Goal 2 is to improve the fitting of amplification by measuring the auditory environmental characteristics of the average day of a child with HL associated with spoken language success. The project will use LENA technology to measure the proportion of the day during which the child is exposed to adult words, noise, silence and TV. Optimal outcomes with amplification are only possible if the child can access spoken language in his/her daily environment as determined by these variables.
